What does TalkingHeads Wireless build?

TalkingHeads is developing energy-efficient macro cellular radios. The first configuration focuses on 1800 MHz Band 3 with concurrent LTE and GSM operation.

Half the energy. Really?

Roughly. Our engineering model puts the radio at approximately 3× lower power draw and the site at around half its total energy, against a comparable incumbent configuration. Lower radio demand also reduces the load on the site power system. We can walk you through the assumptions, build a comparison around your site, and have your lab test it against your acceptance criteria.

Are the energy savings field-validated?

Not yet. The first customer field trial is targeted for H1 2027. The figures on this site come from an internal model against a comparable incumbent configuration, using a 21% / 61% / 18% night / day / peak traffic mix. The approximately 3× radio and half-site-energy headlines are rounded descriptions of the modeled 61% and 47% reductions.

When is the first customer field trial planned?

The current target is H1 2027.

Is TalkingHeads only relevant to off-grid networks?

No. Lower radio power consumption can benefit grid-connected sites through reduced energy demand. At off-grid sites, it may also affect solar, storage and fuel requirements, depending on the site design.

Does a lower-power radio increase coverage range?

Improved energy efficiency does not, by itself, increase a radio’s broadcast range. The coverage opportunity is economic: lower site energy requirements can make additional deployments viable.

What about satellite?

Satellite has an important role, especially in truly remote areas. But direct-to-device satellite is better viewed as a complement to terrestrial cellular networks than a replacement. Towers still offer greater capacity, stronger indoor coverage and better economics where demand is concentrated. Our focus is making those terrestrial sites more efficient and viable in more places.

Will it work with our existing network?

The design uses familiar site interfaces: pole mounting, −48 V DC, Ethernet and GNSS timing. Carrier-grade integration takes work. We’ll review your baseband, timing, power and network requirements with your team and set out what the deployment needs.

What should we bring to a trial conversation?

Can software-defined operation support future capacity needs?

Software-defined operation can support configuration flexibility within the capabilities of the radio hardware. Capacity, mode and upgrade requirements can be reviewed for your specific configuration.
